Polytheism and the Influence of Emotions on Reason

İslam'da şirk, Allah'a ortak koşmak ve O'nun tanrılığını başkalarına atfetmektir. İbadet ve duygular (sevgi, korku, güven) yalnızca Allah'a yöneltilmelidir. İnsan duyguları fıtratımızın parçasıdır ve doğru yönlendirildiğinde Allah'a yaklaştırır, ancak yanlış yönlendirilirse şirke düşürebilir. Duygularımız aklımızı ve vicdanımızı gölgelemeden, doğru istikamette kullanılmalıdır.

In Islamic belief, polytheism (shirk) refers to associating partners with Allah and attributing His divinity to other beings. Islam emphasizes that worship should be directed solely to Allah and that feelings such as love, fear, and trust should be reserved exclusively for Him. However, human emotions, which are part of our creation, can lead a person toward evil inclinations if they are not properly directed.
Shirk often arises when these emotions are directed toward the wrong entities rather than Allah. This can lead a person to act under the influence of emotions, sidelining reason and conscience. Emotions are an essential part of a person’s inner world. Feelings such as love, fear, trust, need, and seeking refuge are innate to human nature and, when properly directed, bring a person closer to Allah and earn His pleasure.
However, if these emotions are misdirected, they can lead a person to deviation and polytheism. The Qur’an explains that a person who seeks truth using reason will clearly perceive the oneness of Allah. Yet, when a person allows emotions to override reason, they become susceptible to Satan’s influence and may follow irrational paths. Correct thinking and action are only possible through the use of reason, but emotions can interfere with reasoning and impede logical judgment. Emotional intensity may cause a person to confuse right with wrong and to attribute divine qualities to beings other than Allah.
The Qur’an describes polytheists as those who, not using their reason, become vulnerable to Satan’s guidance and fall into deviation. This deviation occurs when emotional impulses override rational thought. Correctly directed emotions, however, guide a person toward the right path. When emotions such as love, fear, and trust are directed toward Allah as intended, they strengthen faith and sincerity.
Conversely, when these emotions are misdirected toward other beings, they deviate from their intended purpose. Loving or fearing a created being as one would Allah elevates that being to a divine status, which constitutes shirk. No one other than Allah is truly worthy of love, praise, reverence, fear, or seeking assistance, because He alone is the source of everything and sustains all existence.
Polytheism typically arises when a person disregards reason and succumbs to emotional impulses. Satan can manipulate emotions to lead humans away from the correct path. The Qur’an notes that polytheists act primarily under the influence of emotions and fail to use reason. Emotional impulses drive a person to act contrary to logic and understanding. Humans may forget their responsibilities toward Allah and be misled by emotional attachments they have created. This is the direct result of sidelining reason and conscience.
In conclusion, correct thinking and action are only possible when reason and conscience are actively employed. Emotions are a divine gift inherent to human creation, but misdirected emotions can lead a person into shirk. Islam calls humans to seek and live truth through reason and intellect. Shirk occurs when emotions guide a person instead of reason. Directing one’s emotions according to Allah’s guidance leads to faith and the correct path.
