The Importance of Gratitude for Faith and Sincerity: The Consciousness of Turning to God

Yaşamın her anında karşılaştığımız nimetlerin gerçek sahibinin Allah olduğunu ve şükrün yalnızca O'na yöneltilmesi gerektiğini vurgulayan bu metin, Kur'an'ın öğretilerinden hareketle imanın ve ihlasın güçlenmesinde şükrün önemini anlatıyor. Bakara Suresi 172. ayeti referans alarak, müminlerin Allah'ın verdiği nimetlerden yararlanırken şükretmelerinin imanlarının bir göstergesi olduğunu açıklıyor.

Human beings encounter countless blessings at every moment of their lives. Because these blessings often reach people through intermediaries, individuals frequently attribute them to those intermediaries and feel gratitude toward them. However, the Qur’an teaches that gratitude and thankfulness should be directed only to God. The true Owner of all blessings is God, the Creator of all beings and the Provider of sustenance. This awareness strengthens a person’s faith and increases sincerity (ikhlas).
In the Qur’an, gratitude means recognizing that the source of blessings is God and expressing this gratitude to Him both in the heart and verbally. Gratitude is one of the most important attitudes through which a believer who worships God alone demonstrates faith. This is expressed in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 172:
«“O you who believe! Eat from the good things We have provided for you and give thanks to God, if it is Him alone that you worship.”»
As understood from this verse, giving thanks to God is both a condition and a sign of worshipping Him alone without associating partners with Him. A person who thanks only God knows that all blessings come from Him and that everything exists under His will and control. This awareness distances a person from shirk and leads to pure faith.
However, a common misunderstanding among people is to attribute blessings to the individuals or material causes that appear to bring them and to express gratitude toward them. In the Qur’an, this attitude is described as a fundamental characteristic of the polytheists. The Qur’an defines shirk as associating partners with God and emphasizes that it is the greatest sin. Those who commit shirk attribute their blessings to the means created by God, show gratitude to them, and effectively elevate them to a divine status.
Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 17 clearly criticizes this misunderstanding:
«“You worship idols besides God and invent falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides God have no power to provide you with sustenance. So seek provision from God, worship Him, and give thanks to Him. To Him you will be returned.”»
This verse emphasizes that a person should turn to God, the true Provider of sustenance. Unlike the polytheists, believers give thanks only to God. When a blessing reaches them, they seek its source in God and feel gratitude toward Him.
The Qur’an contains many examples of messengers who possessed this awareness. For instance, the messenger Solomon directed his gratitude solely to God for the blessings he received. In Surah An-Naml, Solomon’s reaction to an extraordinary event that occurred by God’s will is described as follows:
«“One who had knowledge from the Scripture said, ‘I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.’ And when he saw it placed before him, he said, ‘This is by the grace of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. Whoever is grateful is grateful for his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful—indeed, my Lord is Self-Sufficient and Generous.’” (An-Naml 27:40)»
As clearly understood from this verse, Solomon did not thank the intermediaries through whom the event occurred, but rather thanked God who granted the blessing. This attitude demonstrates the faith and sincerity of a believer.
Similarly, the messenger Abraham is described as someone who was grateful to God and never associated partners with Him. In Surah An-Nahl it is stated:
«“Indeed, Abraham was a community in himself, devoted to God, upright, and not among the polytheists. He was grateful for His blessings. God chose him and guided him to a straight path.” (An-Nahl 16:120–121)»
Gratitude strengthens a person’s submission to God and prevents them from falling into shirk. The Qur’an clearly states that Satan’s goal is to make people ungrateful:
«“Because You have misled me, I will sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will find most of them ungrateful.” (Al-A‘raf 7:16–17)»
Satan attempts to distance people from gratitude toward God, pushing them toward shirk and ingratitude. However, a believer who uses reason and faith does not fall into these traps, because the believer is aware that every blessing comes from God.
Emotional reactions can also lead people toward shirk. Feelings such as compassion, affection, and grief may sometimes prevent a person from using reason properly. For example, excessive sorrow over the death of a loved one may lead someone to rebel against God or fall into shirk. A believer, however, knows that death is also a decree of God and that for the innocent it can be a gateway to relief. With this awareness, a person controls emotions and does not succumb to Satan’s whispers.
For a believer, gratitude is not only an act of worship but also a behavior that strengthens faith and increases sincerity. Seeking the source of blessings in God rather than in intermediaries protects a person from falling into shirk. The model of the human being praised in the Qur’an is one who turns to God in every situation, gives thanks to Him, and stays away from shirk.
This awareness gives meaning to a believer’s life both in this world and in the Hereafter. A believer who gives thanks to God is a servant who worships only Him and submits only to Him. A person who understands the deep meaning of gratitude strengthens their devotion to their Lord and is protected from the traps of Satan.
