For every believer, faith (iman) should be the most fundamental matter at the center of life. However, faith is not merely believing in God; it gains its true meaning when a person turns to Him with pure devotion, without associating anything with Him. In this context, hidden shirk—placing trust in beings or powers other than God—becomes one of the most dangerous elements that can overshadow a person’s faith.
The verses of the Qur’an repeatedly emphasize the sensitivity of the matter of faith and the importance of avoiding shirk. For this reason, every believer should reflect deeply on this issue, examine themselves, and direct their hearts solely toward God.
Pure faith means that a person sees only God as the true friend and helper, seeks only His pleasure in all actions, and organizes life according to the criteria set by Him. God’s command, “And turn to your Lord” (Surah Ash-Sharh 94:8), clearly expresses this reality. A person must know that all blessings and powers in this world are under God’s control and must place trust only in Him. This is possible only by accepting that nothing other than God takes precedence in a person’s life.
Hidden shirk occurs when a person, often without realizing it, mixes devotion to God with the desire to please other beings. Sometimes it appears as striving to gain people’s approval, and sometimes as placing one’s own desires above God’s pleasure. The Qur’an clearly forbids this state:
«“Turn to Him, be mindful of Him, establish prayer, and do not be among those who associate partners with Him.” (Surah Ar-Rum 30:31)»
A believer should rely only on God and fear only Him. God promises to guide those who turn to Him with sincere devotion to the straight path, while also making clear that hidden shirk is one of the greatest obstacles on this journey.
Turning wholeheartedly to God means that a person makes the pleasure of God the primary aim and places unwavering trust in Him. This understanding includes several essential principles:
- Trusting Only in God
A person must recognize that every hardship and every ease in life comes from God, and therefore should seek no helper besides Him. - Seeking the Pleasure of God
In all acts of worship, actions, and intentions, the primary goal must be to gain God’s approval. The satisfaction of other people must never take precedence over this aim. - Following God’s Commands and Prohibitions
A believer organizes life according to the rules set by God. This applies both to personal acts of worship and to social life. - Freeing Oneself from Worldly Concerns
What people think, say, or how they judge others should not be decisive for someone who turns toward God. For such a person, the approval of God—the true Friend—is sufficient.
Many believers may think they are far from shirk. However, instead of being certain about this, a person should remain in constant self-examination. The desires of the self, the attractions of worldly life, and the influence of people can lead someone into the trap of hidden shirk without them even realizing it. For this reason, a believer must continually evaluate their faith and strive to cleanse their heart from traces of hidden shirk.
Pure faith is the most precious treasure in the life of a believer. Reaching this level of faith requires seeing God above everything, trusting only in Him, and making His pleasure the ultimate goal. God has promised to guide those who turn to Him with pure devotion to the straight path.
However, along this path, hidden shirk must be recognized and avoided through constant effort. The most important matter in a believer’s life is to turn only to God and to make the attainment of His pleasure the ultimate objective. The approval of others should remain secondary, and all actions must be shaped according to what pleases God.
Only in this way can a person become a servant with whom God is pleased.
