Faith, Reason, and Shirk: The Path to Transcending Traditional Thought

Islam is a religion that liberates the human mind and soul. However, some people restrict this freedom according to their own ideological and traditional beliefs, thereby abandoning the true Islam and surrounding themselves with false beliefs.
The following verse in the Qur’an clearly highlights this point:
> “And they will say: Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our leaders and our elders, and they led us astray from the path.” (Al-Ahzab, 33:67)
This verse draws attention to the fact that blindly obeying elders and leaders causes people to deviate from the right path. Islam requires the individual to seek truth, use reason, and turn to Allah consciously. However, traditional beliefs and superstitions deprive people of this intellectual freedom.
Every Muslim should use the intellect given by Allah as a blessing in order to find the truth.
Those who adopt a traditionalist approach have turned Islam into a cultural identity and have become attached not to reason, but to inherited teachings, sects, and the influence of mysticism (tasawwuf). Such individuals lose their ability to distinguish right from wrong. Instead of seeing the truth in the Qur’an, they connect themselves to hadiths, sects, and mystical teachings, allowing these frameworks to obscure their intellect. This is what it means to fall into shirk.
Shirk nullifies human reason and prevents the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood.
> “And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you from the path of Allah. They follow nothing but conjecture and they only lie.” (Al-An’am, 6:116)
This verse states that the majority of people do not necessarily follow the truth, and therefore following them can lead a person astray.
Those who defend traditional views often adopt the mentality of “this is how it has always been, so we continue like this.” This approach prevents individuals from using their reason. Reason should be shaped only by knowledge based on the Qur’an.
Shirk, in turn, blinds the intellect from seeing the truth.
True Muslims who believe in the Qur’an and the essence of Islam do not follow inherited traditions blindly; instead, they choose to live according to Allah’s commands. These people are not afraid to remain in the minority in their pursuit of truth.
For a person of Qur’anic consciousness, it is impossible to stand in the same line with those who are “drowned in shirk up to their throats” and who lie against the truth.
The spirit belongs to the minority, not the majority. By breaking away from false beliefs within the majority and remaining among the few who seek truth, they defend what is right.
This means accepting that standing for truth in society is often a difficult and isolating process. However, the path to gaining Allah’s pleasure also passes through this difficult journey.
The Qur’an emphasizes that a person’s beliefs are reflected in the groups they align with externally. In other words, the people and ideas one supports are a reflection of one’s inner belief system.
For this reason, a Muslim who adopts correct belief and moral values can never stand on the side of falsehood.
Islam calls the individual to use reason in order to seek truth and find reality. The intellect is the most valuable blessing given to humans and is the greatest guide in reaching truth.
Shirk, on the other hand, darkens this intellect with false beliefs and prevents a person from seeing the truth.
Therefore, a Muslim should be shaped only by the Qur’an and remain distant from false beliefs and traditional distortions.
In conclusion, correctly understanding the essence of Islam is only possible by using our reason and following the commands of Allah. Falling into shirk and rigid traditional thinking misguides a person and renders the intellect ineffective.
Muslims should not fear being in the minority on the path of truth and should turn away from traditional distortions in order to follow the path of Allah.
