Shirk and the Definition of Polytheists According to the Qur’an

The Qur’an is a book revealed to guide humanity to the right path, and it contains explanations regarding all essential matters of life. One of these matters is the concept of shirk and the definition of polytheists (mushrikun). Shirk means associating partners with God, attributing equals to Him. This belief violates the respect and recognition due to the oneness and absolute authority of God. In the Qur’an, polytheists are described as people who believe in God yet corrupt the religion by worshiping idols, statues, or other intermediary beings that they themselves have invented.
In the Qur’an, polytheists are generally described as a group. This group acknowledges the existence of God, yet they associate partners with Him and build their belief system on this association. As a social group, polytheists share similar characteristics both in their beliefs and in their social structures. Although they believe in God, they see no problem in accepting prophets as partners in God’s authority, or in accepting hadiths, sectarian doctrines, and the words of religious scholars without examining them in light of the Qur’an. For this reason, the religious beliefs of polytheists are not only individually misguided but also socially harmful.
Polytheists accept the idols they have invented as intercessors before God. In Yunus (Jonah), the Qur’an refutes this belief and states:
> “They worship besides God things that can neither harm nor benefit them, and they say: ‘These are our intercessors with God.’ Say: ‘Do you inform God of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?’ Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.”(Qur’an 10:18)
This verse shows that polytheists fail to understand God’s power and knowledge, and as a result they consider associating partners with Him to be acceptable. Furthermore, the religious beliefs of polytheists formed a social structure that became established in society with a mindset that corrupted the essence of religion.
The Qur’an also discusses the acts of worship practiced by polytheists. These communities performed religious rituals such as worshiping God and circumambulating the Kaaba. However, they did not perform their worship sincerely and exclusively for God. Instead, they also worshiped idols alongside God, thereby committing shirk. Yet they were not conscious of this error. Therefore, such acts of worship hold no validity in the sight of God. In Surah At-Tawbah, God says:
> “O you who believe! Indeed the polytheists are impure. So after this year let them not approach the Sacred Mosque. And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”(Qur’an 9:28)
This verse indicates that the religious rituals of polytheists are invalid as long as they are not directed sincerely to God alone, and that they are not even permitted to approach the Sacred Mosque.
The failure of polytheists to follow God’s commands in their religious practices negatively affects both social order and individual morality. Instead of directing their worship solely to God, they turn to other beings as well, thereby corrupting their religious beliefs. Such false beliefs lead societies toward irreligion, moral decline, and social injustice.
The descriptions of polytheists in the Qur’an reveal that although they consider themselves to be on the right path, they have in fact adopted a misguided belief system. Polytheists act with a mindset that associates partners with God and accept religious rulings they have invented, defending them as absolute truths. The Qur’an describes their attitude as follows:
> “They were astonished that a warner had come to them from among themselves, and the disbelievers said: ‘This is a lying magician. Has he made the gods into one God? Indeed, this is a strange thing.’ Their leaders went out saying: ‘Walk away and remain steadfast to your gods; indeed this is something desired. We have not heard of this in the previous religion; this is nothing but an invention. Has the Reminder been sent down to him alone from among us?’ In fact, they are in doubt about My Reminder. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.”(Qur’an 38:4–8)
These verses show that polytheists rejected the true religion and instead accepted their own invented beliefs as truth. Although they appear to have found the right path, they have actually deviated into false beliefs.
Another example is that on the Day of Judgment those who associated partners with God will deny their polytheism. In Surah Al-An‘am, it is stated that on that Day they will be asked:
> “Where are the partners you used to claim?”
And they will have no response except to say:
> “By God, our Lord, we were not among those who associated partners.”
(Qur’an 6:22–23)
This shows that they will resist acknowledging their own deviation.
The fundamental cause of shirk is failing to know God properly and failing to appreciate Him as He deserves. According to the Qur’an, the best way to understand God correctly and to turn to Him is to adopt the Qur’an as a guide. The Qur’an is the explanation of everything and was revealed to guide humanity to the right path. In Surah An-Nahl, it is stated:
> “And the Day We raise from every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and We bring you as a witness against these. And We have sent down to you the Book explaining all things, as guidance, mercy, and good news for those who submit.”(Qur’an 16:89)
Those who do not adopt the Qur’an as their guide fall into false beliefs and associate partners with God. Such people rely on superstitions and fabricated stories they have invented, thereby adopting an incorrect attitude toward God. The root of shirk is failing to recognize God’s true power and greatness. The Qur’an introduces humanity to the true nature and authority of God and thus shows the right path.
The Qur’an addresses the concept of shirk and polytheism both individually and socially. Polytheists believe in God but associate partners with Him and defend false systems of belief. Such beliefs are neither individually nor socially valid. While guiding humanity, the Qur’an emphasizes that worship must be directed sincerely and exclusively to God.
Since the root cause of shirk is failing to know God properly and failing to adopt the Qur’an as a guide, the only source that truly guides people to the right path is the Qur’an. The attitudes of polytheists have historically caused the spread of deviant beliefs that corrupt religion in many societies, and it is possible to observe the continuation of such attitudes even today. In this context, turning to the Qur’an is the only way to understand the true religion and to worship God in the genuine sense.
