Ignorance and Insincerity

Islam places knowledge and sincerity at the center of human life, emphasizing the importance of holding correct beliefs and living according to Allah’s commands. However, throughout history, many people have strayed from the right path and fallen into polytheism due to ignorance and insincerity.
The Qur’an describes ignorance as one of the greatest causes that lead people away from the right path. Humans need correct knowledge to understand the oneness and greatness of Allah. Without it, people turn to false beliefs and fall into polytheism. Regarding the ignorance of polytheists, the Qur’an states:
> “And if any of the polytheists seeks your protection, grant it to him so that he may hear the word of Allah, then deliver him safely. Indeed, they are a people who do not know.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 6)
This verse clearly indicates that polytheists are an ignorant people, and without guidance toward correct knowledge, they are highly susceptible to falling into polytheism. Ignorance is the primary factor that prevents humans from understanding Allah’s oneness and embracing true belief.
Tawhid, the belief in the oneness of Allah, forms the foundation of Islam. Believing in Allah’s oneness and worshiping Him alone is a prerequisite for correct faith. However, ignorance drives humans away from this fundamental belief, leading them toward polytheism. The Qur’an frequently emphasizes the belief in tawhid and the dangers of polytheism:
> “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And whoever associates partners with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.” (Surah An-Nisa, 48)
This verse stresses that polytheism is an unforgivable sin and that humans must turn solely to Allah. The main reason people fail to adopt the belief in tawhid is their lack of correct knowledge and their persistence in ignorance.
Equally dangerous as ignorance is insincerity. Even if a person possesses correct knowledge, they cannot remain on the right path unless they internalize it sincerely. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes that knowledge is not merely an intellectual exercise but must reside in the heart. For example, it states:
> “Those who were entrusted with the Torah but did not carry it are like a donkey carrying books. How wretched is the example of those who deny the verses of Allah, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah, 5)
This verse illustrates that superficial knowledge alone is insufficient; knowledge must take root in the heart and manifest in action. If a person is not sincerely committed to Allah’s commands, knowledge provides no benefit.
Polytheism is the greatest sin that undermines a person’s faith and devotion to Allah. The Qur’an warns that the deeds of those who associate partners with Allah will be in vain:
> “It was revealed to you and to those before you: if you associate partners with Allah, your deeds will be lost, and you will be among the losers.” (Surah Az-Zumar, 65)
Polytheism not only results in losing Allah’s pleasure but also endangers one’s Hereafter. Those who commit polytheism prioritize their desires and worldly interests over their devotion to Allah.
Sincerity is a cornerstone of faith in Islam. A person must express belief in Allah not only through words but also through heartfelt and practical devotion. The Qur’an explains the necessity of sincerity as follows:
> “When it is said to them, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ they say, ‘Sufficient for us is what we found our forefathers upon.’ Even though their forefathers did not know anything and were not guided?” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 104)
This verse emphasizes abandoning past false beliefs and sincerely adhering to the truth revealed by Allah. Sincerity is achieved by abandoning selfish desires and seeking only Allah’s pleasure.
Even if humans fall into polytheism due to ignorance and insincerity, Allah’s mercy is limitless. The Qur’an states that sincere repentance can save a person from polytheism:
> “Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’” (Surah Az-Zumar, 53)
Repentance not only entails forgiveness for past mistakes but also involves committing to live according to Allah’s commands in the future. One who turns to Allah with sincere repentance attains His mercy and forgiveness.
Ignorance and insincerity are the two most important factors that lead humans to polytheism. The Qur’an teaches people the correct knowledge and belief in tawhid while commanding that this knowledge be implemented sincerely in life. Knowledge must be supported not only by the mind but also by the heart and actions. Strengthening one’s devotion to Allah requires both learning and sincerely internalizing that knowledge. In the Qur’an, such sincerity is defined by a person’s deep love and devotion to Allah. The path to salvation from polytheism is to turn to Allah with correct knowledge and sincere repentance. A sincere believer prioritizes Allah’s pleasure above all else and shapes their life accordingly.
