The Danger of Fearing Others Besides God

İslam'da korku duygusu yalnızca Allah'a yöneltilmelidir. Allah'tan başkasına korku duymak, şirk olarak kabul edilir. Korku, insan davranışlarını etkileyen güçlü bir duygudur ve doğru yönlendirilmesi iman açısından hayati önem taşır. Kur'an, Allah dışındaki varlıklara duyulan korkunun şirke yol açtığını vurgular. Mutlak güç sahibi olan Allah'a karşı duyulan saygı ve haşyet dışındaki korkular, kişinin inancını tehlikeye sokar.

In Islamic belief, fear is an emotion that should be directed only toward God. However, when this feeling is misdirected and directed toward beings other than God, it leads to shirk, that is, associating partners with God. Fear is a powerful emotion capable of influencing a person's attitudes and behavior. Therefore, directing fear correctly is extremely important for faith. If the object of fear is something other than God, this situation endangers a person's belief.
The Qur’an emphasizes that fear directed toward any being other than God leads to shirk—treating a being as equal to God. The only fear truly worthy is the fear felt toward God's power, might, and majesty. God is the absolute possessor of power. Everything exists by His will, and nothing occurs except by His permission. When God wills harm for someone, there is no power that can prevent it. For this reason, fear should be directed only toward God.
Directing fear toward something other than God implies accepting that being as possessing an independent power and authority apart from God. In a sense, this amounts to deifying that being. The Qur’an clearly expresses this by stating that people should fear only God. In Surah An-Nahl, God says:
“Do not take two gods. Indeed, He is but One God. So fear only Me. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him belongs the religion always. Then will you fear other than God?” (An-Nahl 16:51–52).
The Qur’an also states that God is sufficient for His servant. In Surah Az-Zumar, God says:
“Is God not sufficient for His servant? Yet they frighten you with those besides Him. And whoever God leads astray—there will be no guide for him.” (Az-Zumar 39:36).
Because God possesses absolute power, no other being can be a source of fear for human beings. Islam repeatedly reminds people to rely solely on God. Misplacing fear not only endangers a person spiritually but also places the individual under the influence of whatever power they fear. Fear directed toward others besides God can damage a person’s intellect and faith. This is a great danger.
The Qur’an also explains that fearing others instead of God stems from a lack of deep understanding. In Surah Al-Hashr, it states:
“You are more feared in their hearts than God. That is because they are a people who do not understand.” (Al-Hashr 59:13).
This verse clearly shows that fearing beings other than God is irrational and contrary to sound reasoning. In the face of God’s power, no being possesses a strength worthy of fear. Therefore, fearing only God is a sign of sound intellect and genuine faith.
Fear occupies an important place in human life, but it must be directed to the right place at the right time. Fear directed toward beings other than God leads a person toward shirk and endangers their faith. Islam regards fear of others besides God as irrational and rejects it. A person should fear only God and recognize His power and majesty. The direction of fear shapes a person's faith, and when it is misdirected, one's belief can suffer serious harm.
