The Importance of Prayer and the Impact of Cultural Restrictions on It

İslam'da namaz, Allah ile bağı güçlendiren temel bir ibadet olup, günümüzde özellikle kadınları etkileyen bazı kültürel uygulamalar namazın doğru anlaşılmasını engelleyebilmektedir. Kur'an, namazın her koşulda kılınması gerektiğini vurgulamaktadır. Kadınların örtünmesiyle ilgili ayetler doğrudan namaz ibadetiyle ilişkili olmayıp, mahremiyet amacı taşımaktadır.

Prayer (Salat) is one of the core acts of worship in Islam and is among the most important practices that strengthen a person’s connection with Allah. However, in today’s world, certain cultural and traditional practices—especially affecting women—can hinder the proper understanding and practice of prayer. The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of prayer in many verses, to the extent that even under difficult conditions such as war, it should not be abandoned:
«“And establish the prayer properly and be mindful of Him. It is He to whom you will be gathered.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:239)»
As this verse indicates, prayer is a priority in every moment of life. The Qur’an does not command postponing prayers but rather performing them according to the circumstances.
The Qur’an also contains verses regarding women’s covering. However, these verses are not directly related to the act of prayer but are intended to protect women’s modesty in the presence of non-mahram individuals:
«“O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw their coverings over themselves. That is more suitable so that they may be recognized and not be harmed. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:59)»
«“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and not display their adornment except what is apparent thereof. And let them draw their coverings over their chests and not reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers… And let them not strike their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And all of you, O believers, turn to Allah in repentance so that you may succeed.” (Surah An-Nur, 24:31)»
These verses clearly show that the primary purpose of covering is to protect modesty and prevent harm. However, this understanding may vary depending on cultural and regional contexts.
The Qur’an does not prescribe any specific clothing requirement for performing prayer. Imposing particular dress codes for prayer—especially on women—can lead to distancing people from this act of worship. Many women neglect prayer due to the belief that they cannot perform it without wearing traditional garments. Yet, the only essential condition for standing before Allah is physical and spiritual cleanliness:
«“O children of Adam! We have provided you with clothing to cover your private parts and as adornment. But the garment of righteousness—that is best. This is from the signs of Allah so that they may take heed.” (Surah Al-A‘raf, 7:26)»
This verse explains that clothing primarily serves to cover and beautify a person. While garments worn during prayer should be clean and presentable, there is no command requiring them to follow a specific form.
Today, certain rules and dress requirements enforced in mosques may discourage young people and women from engaging with prayer. For example, in some large mosques, women are not allowed to enter without covering their heads or if they are wearing trousers, and they may be required to use coverings whose hygiene is questionable. Such practices reflect cultural traditions rather than Qur’anic commands and contradict the religion’s spirit of ease:
«“Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185)»
These impositions can particularly alienate individuals from modern backgrounds from religion. Yet, Allah commands only that a person approach Him with a sincere heart and pure intention.
Prayer is a personal bond between the servant and Allah, and no cultural or traditional barrier should stand in the way of this connection. While covering is an act that protects and beautifies, it is not a condition of prayer. Everyone should be able to turn to their Lord in cleanliness and humility, regardless of their current attire.
The spirit of the Qur’an promotes ease, not hardship. Therefore, it is a great loss for young people and women to distance themselves from prayer due to unnecessary restrictions. Understanding and living Islam correctly is only possible by correcting such misconceptions:
«“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:107)»
Without forgetting that Islam is a religion of mercy and ease, it is our responsibility to open the paths that bring people closer to Allah and to remove the obstacles in this process.
