The Great Obstacle to Faith

"İman ve Gizli Şirk: İnanç Saflığını Korumak" adlı bu metin, imanın özünde Allah'a tam teslimiyet ve güven olduğunu vurgularken, gizli şirkin tehlikelerine dikkat çekiyor. Allah'a ortak koşmanın farkında olmadan bile gerçekleşebileceğini ve "biraz şirk, biraz iman" anlayışının yanlışlığını açıklayan bu yazı, gerçek imanın ancak Allah'a tam bağlılıkla mümkün olduğunu hatırlatıyor.

Faith is the foundation of a believer’s devotion and submission to God. However, one of the most dangerous elements that can corrupt the purity of this devotion and submission is hidden shirk. Shirk means associating partners with God, and it can appear either openly or subtly. Hidden shirk occurs when a person, often without realizing it, assumes that certain events happen independently of God or includes other beings in the loyalty and reliance that should belong solely to Him. This situation is incompatible with true faith and is one of the greatest obstacles preventing a person from truly believing.
Sometimes people act with a misguided idea such as “a little shirk and a little faith.” This mindset stems from the belief that there is no harm in accepting that, alongside events under God’s control, other powers might also have influence. However, this is a serious misconception. Faith requires complete submission to God and reliance only upon Him. In the Qur’an, God draws attention to this truth in many verses and commands that no partners be associated with Him in any way.
In verses 59–64 of Surah An-Naml, God invites people to reflect and says:
> “Say: Praise be to God, and peace be upon His chosen servants.
Is God better, or what they associate with Him?
Or the One who created the heavens and the earth and sends down water from the sky for you, by which We produce delightful gardens whose trees you could never cause to grow?
Is there a god with God? No, but they are a people who deviate.
Or the One who made the earth a stable place and placed rivers within it, set firm mountains upon it, and placed a barrier between the two seas— is there a god with God? Yet most of them do not know.
Or the One who responds to the distressed when he calls upon Him, removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth— is there a god with God? Little do you reflect.
Or the One who guides you through the darkness of land and sea and sends the winds as heralds of His mercy— is there a god with God? Exalted is God above what they associate with Him.
Or the One who begins creation and then repeats it, and who provides for you from the heaven and the earth— is there a god with God? Say: Bring your proof if you are truthful.”
These verses clearly express that all existence comes into being only by God’s will and that every event occurs under His control. A Muslim should never assume that any event occurs independently of God and should turn only to Him.
Hidden shirk is a distortion of understanding that affects every aspect of a person’s life. Shirk harms not only the hereafter but also a person’s life in this world:

  1. It Prevents True Faith
If a person believes that powers other than God exist independently, their submission and reliance on God decrease. This weakens their faith and leads them toward a life filled with unrest.
  2. It Blinds the Mind and Insight
Shirk dulls a person’s intellect and spiritual perception. As a result, they become unable to distinguish truth from falsehood and may be deceived by the attractive illusions of worldly life.
  3. It Makes One Forget the Purpose of Life
Hidden shirk can overshadow the true purpose of human existence. The real aim—to worship God and devote oneself solely to Him—is forgotten.
  4. It Endangers the Hereafter
A person who lives while associating partners with God cannot attain His pleasure. This becomes a serious threat to eternal salvation.
Completely freeing oneself from shirk and attaining pure faith is both possible and necessary for a Muslim. In this process, the following points are important:
  5. Sincerity
Faith is built upon sincerity. Being honest and genuine while turning to God is the first step toward escaping shirk.
  6. Recognizing God’s Power
A person must understand that God is the Creator and Sustainer of everything. There is no other being that possesses independent power.
  7. Understanding and Living by the Qur’an
The Qur’an is the guide that leads humanity away from shirk and toward the straight path. Reflecting on its verses and living according to them strengthens faith.
  8. Trusting in God (Tawakkul)
A Muslim should rely solely on God in every situation and place their trust in Him. God never abandons His sincere servants.
God has promised great blessings in both this world and the hereafter for His servants who turn to Him with pure faith free from shirk. In Surah An-Nur, verse 55, God says:
    > “God has promised those among you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession in the earth as He granted it to those before them, and that He will firmly establish for them their religion which He has approved for them, and that He will replace their fear with security. They will worship Me and will not associate anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that—those are the defiantly disobedient.”
And in Surah An-Nisa, verse 146:
    > “Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold firmly to God, and make their religion purely for Him. They will be with the believers, and God will soon grant the believers a great reward.”
Completely purifying oneself from shirk should be one of the most important goals in every Muslim’s life. This process is neither impossible nor overly difficult. If a person sincerely turns to God and seeks help only from Him, they can be freed from shirk.
A Muslim should live their love and devotion to God without associating anything with Him. This pure faith brings peace and happiness in worldly life and enables a person to become among those with whom God is pleased in the hereafter.
It must never be forgotten that religion can only be truly lived when it is pure and uncompromised.
